When is the best time of year to start laser hair removal?

Most of us want a smooth and hair-free complexion for summer and to rid ourselves of the bothersome task of shaving or waxing every 1-2 days to prep for the beach. That being said, most people also don’t realize that waiting until spring or summer is the worst time to begin addressing hair removal with laser. Here are a few primary reasons that the fall and winter seasons are the best time of year to get laser hair removal treatment.

It takes time to complete the laser hair removal sessions

It’s best to begin laser hair removal at the end of summer, or even into the fall or winter. Laser hair removal requires multiple treatments which are staggered 4-8 weeks apart depending on the area being treated. Once summer has started, there is not enough time to successfully complete a laser treatment plan. For a successful course of treatments, (generally 6-10 sessions), spaced 4-8 weeks apart, it can take about a year start to finish!

Color of skin and hair is the key to laser hair removal

The dark hair absorbs the heat energy of the laser thereby making the follicle useless. As such, the greater the contrast between skin colour and the hair colour, the more efficient and effective the treatment will be. People with tanned skin (either by the sun or artificial) are discouraged from having laser hair removal treatments. Using this treatment on tanned skin requires the power of the laser to be turned down, which may result in more treatment sessions. By having treatments during the fall and winter, the overall number of treatments will likely be less for most fair-skinned people. Meaning that in the fall and winter months, regardless of your natural skin tone, your skin will respond better to laser. Meaning quicker, safer, and more cost-efficient results.

Laser hair removal treatments temporarily make you more sensitive to the sun

Another reason fall and winter are a good time for laser hair removal is due to skin sensitivity post-treatments. After each treatment, the skin is sensitive to sun exposure. A person having laser hair removal needs to wait about one month after completion of treatment to be safely exposed to the sun or tanning beds. The waiting period prevents skin damage and discolouration from occurring. However, if you generally keep your skin covered in the summer or don't go outside much, summer is still a viable time to get laser hair removal treatment - with SPF application always of course!

Getting started on your laser journey in the fall gives you the most time to complete your hair removal journey before the following Summer. Without interruptions of sun exposure or tanning and with as little of a tan as possible, you will save time and money and get the best results possible!
